Zidoval vaginal gel is a cream containing the antibiotic metronidazole, which can be applied topically to treat bacterial vaginosis. It's a convenient way to reduce your symptoms and ensure comfort.
When to Use Zidoval Gel?
Zidoval Gel (vaginal metronidazole gel) treats bacterial vaginosis, which is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria.
As a prescription-only treatment, it's suitable for adults over 18 and is most beneficial when the symptoms first occur.
The treatment duration typically lasts five days, and you should begin to experience relief once you take it.
Zidoval Gel Age Restrictions
Metronidazole vaginal gel for bacterial infections is only suitable for adults aged 18 and over. However, people over 65 should avoid it due to potential side effects.
If you want to use it, please contact a doctor for advice, as they can determine whether it's the right solution for your needs.
How to Use Zidoval Gel for Bacterial Vaginosis?
When using Zidoval Gel, you'll usually use one dose of 5mg daily. An applicator is inserted into the vagina once daily, which provides optimal symptom relief:
- Prepare: Wash your hands before using the gel and remove the cap. Then open one of the applicators.
- Fill the Applicator: Screw the applicator onto the tube of Zidoval Gel, then push the tube until the plunger reaches the full mark. Unscrew the applicator and place the cap back onto the gel tube.
- Insert the Applicator: Find a comfortable position and gently insert the applicator into your vagina - as far as it will go.
- Release the Gel: Push the applicator's plunger to empty the gel, then release the applicator.
- Discard: Never use the same applicator twice. Dispose of it once you're finished, then wash your hands.
When to Avoid Using Zidoval to Treat Bacterial Vaginosis?
If any of the following apply, please avoid using Zidoval Gel and ask your registered pharmacist for alternative treatment recommendations:
- Allergies: If you're allergic or sensitive to Metronidazole or any other ingredients found in the gel, please avoid using it.
- Disulfiram: If you've used Antabuse (disulfiram) in the last fortnight, you should avoid using the gel, as it can result in extreme mental and cognitive changes.
- Alcohol: You should avoid alcohol while using Zidoval Gel and for 48 hours after finishing your treatment.
- Sexual Intercourse: We also recommend avoiding sexual intercourse while you have a bacterial infection and during the course of your treatment.
Zidoval Gel Precautions:
- Menstruation: If you're menstruating, it's best to avoid using the treatment until after your period finishes. However, if the infection is particularly bad, your doctor might say it's OK to use it.
- Latex: The gel's ingredients might weaken or damage diaphragms and latex condoms, impacting their contraceptive ability.
- Pregnant/Breastfeeding Women: While you may be able to use the gel while pregnant or breastfeeding, please speak to your healthcare professional first.
- Medical Conditions: People with medical conditions that impact the liver, blood, and nervous system should also take precautions when using the treatment. Please tell your doctor about all medications you're taking.
