What is the Wegovy Pill?

The Wegovy pill is the name for an oral tablet version of semaglutide created by Novo Nordisk. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by:

  • Reducing appetite
  • Increasing feelings of fullness (satiety)
  • Slowing gastric emptying

These effects help people eat less and lose weight over time.

In the UK, Wegovy currently offers semaglutide via a once-weekly injection. The tablet form aims to provide a needle-free alternative, taken once daily.

We know that for some of our patients at Pharmacy Online, being able to take the medication orally rather than subcutaneously will be a game changer, as it already has been for many in the USA.

The Wegovy oral tablet is designed specifically for:

  • Obesity treatment
  • Weight management
  • Long-term maintenance after weight loss

How does the Wegovy pill work?

The Wegovy weight loss pill works in the same way that the injection does, it is just consumed in a different way. The tablet contains the same active ingredient as the injection, semaglutide, which emulates the effects of the naturally occurring hormone – GLP-1.

Once consumed, the Wegovy tablet works to aid weight loss by:

  1. Repressing appetite and increasing satiety
  2. Slowing gastric emptying
  3. Regulating blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion

4mgTitration£106

Like other GLP-1 medications, the Wegovy pill is expected to be prescribed using a dose titration schedule — starting at a low dose and stepping up gradually over several weeks to help your body adjust and reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea.

In the OASIS-4 clinical trials, patients began on 3mg once daily for the first four weeks, before progressing through 7mg and 14mg to a 25mg maintenance dose. Unlike the once-weekly Wegovy injection, the tablet is taken every day.

How effective are Wegovy pills?

In a major clinical trial carried out by the FDA , the effectiveness of the Wegovy in tablet form and the effectiveness of injections were found to be comparable.

Adults taking the 25mg Wegovy tablet lost an average of around 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks (NEJM, 2025), compared with approximately 20.7% weight loss in those using the 7.2mg Wegovy injection over 72 weeks (NCBI, 2025).

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of the tablet is impacted significantly by how it is taken. For optimal absorption, you should:

  • Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking any other medication
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water

How long does the Wegovy pill take to work?

The Wegovy pill is said to start working to reduce your appetite within the first few days to weeks of taking it. Noticeable weight loss will usually start around 4 to 8 weeks after daily use.

Wegovy Pill vs Injections

If you're already considering Wegovy, one of the first questions is whether the oral tablet or the weekly injection is the better fit for you. Both formats deliver the same active ingredient — semaglutide — but they differ in dose, dosing frequency, storage and absorption.

The comparison below sets out the key differences so you can see which format aligns best with your lifestyle and treatment goals.

How does the Wegovy pill compare to other weight loss treatments?

If you're deciding which weight loss treatment is right for you, it helps to see how the Wegovy pill measures up against the other GLP-1 and incretin-based options. The table below summarises the average weight loss reported in the main Phase 3 clinical trials for each treatment.

Because these figures come from separate trials with different durations and dosing schedules, they are best used as a general guide rather than a direct head-to-head comparison — your prescriber at Pharmacy Online can help you choose the most suitable option during your online consultation.
