Seretide evohaler is an asthma inhaler which contains two medicines.
- One ingredient is the long-acting bronchodilator salmeterol. Salmeterol keeps your airways open and prevents asthma symptoms.
- The second medicine is fluticasone. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid which reduces inflammation and the swelling in your airways.
Seretide is a purple inhaler and it needs to be used every day, twice daily.
The Seretide Evohaler is available in three strengths, each one with 25 micrograms of salmeterol xinafoate, but increasing fluticasone propionate dosage:
- 25 micrograms of salmeterol xinafoate, and 50 micrograms of fluticasone propionate, per inhalation.
- 25 micrograms of salmeterol xinafoate, and 125 micrograms of fluticasone propionate, per inhalation.
- 25 micrograms of salmeterol xinafoate, and 250 micrograms of fluticasone propionate, per inhalation.
Seretide can sometimes cause side effects. The most common side effect is a headache. More than one in ten Seretide users experience headaches.
Common Seretide side effects
- thrush (fungal infection) in the mouth
- sore tongue
- throat irritation
- hoarse voice
- join aches and swellings
- muscle pain
- muscle cramps
Because Seretide contains steroids, systemic corticosteroid side effects can include: ‘central serous chorioretinopathy – a rare and serious eye condition.
Seek medical advice as soon as possible if you get any sight problems on Seretide.
Do not use a Seretide inhaler if you are allergic to salmeterol xinafoate, fluticasone propionate or lactose monohydrate.
Speak to your doctor before using Seretide if you suffer from:
- heart disease
- overactive thyroid gland
- high blood pressure
- diabetes mellitus
- low potassium levels in your blood
- tuberculosis
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor whether you can continue using Seretide.

Drug Interactions:
Tell your doctor if you are currently taking or have recently taken any other medication. Seretide can interact with other medications. These include:
- beta-blockers (used to treat hypertension)
- antiviral and antifungal medicines, such as ritonavir, ketoconazole and itraconazole
- systemic corticosteroids in the form of tablets or injections
