When to Use A Salbutamol Inhaler?

As a reliever inhaler, Salbutamol is suitable for when you are experiencing breathing issues related to asthma. However, you can also use it before engaging in physical activity:

  • During Asthma Symptoms: If you’re experiencing coughing, problems breathing, or chest tightness, you can use the inhaler to decrease your symptoms. It’s also suitable for use during an asthma attack as it relaxes and opens up the airways.
  • Before Activities: If certain things, such as pets or physical activity, trigger your symptoms, you can use the reliever inhaler beforehand to reduce your symptoms and prevent an attack from happening.

Salbutamol Inhaler Age Restrictions

Salbutamol inhalers are suitable for adults and children of all ages, if prescribed by a doctor. However, the medicine is usually administered differently depending on your age:

  • Babies to 5 Years Old: In most cases, Salbutamol is administered to young children through a mask and spacer device, which ensures the medicine reaches their lungs. Asthma nurses or doctors provide guidance for parents on how to do this.
  • Children 5 and Over: Older children may still use a spacer until they become accustomed to the inhaler. Then they’ll transition to the traditional inhaler.

During an attack, you can take up to 10 puffs, waiting up to 60 seconds between them. However, if your symptoms don’t improve after 10 minutes, it’s essential to seek immediate medical advice.

If you’re administering Salbutamol to a child, please follow your doctor’s instructions.
