Ranitidine is an oral medication that belongs to the family of drugs known as histamine-2 receptor antagonists. It is used to treat conditions such as acid reflux, GORD, heartburn and peptic ulcers. It works by preventing certain cells within the stomach lining from producing acid, allowing peptic ulcers to heal and prevent any reflux towards the respiratory tract. It is recommended that the patient take a twice-daily dose regularly for therapeutic results to be at its most effective, ideally in the morning and evening.

There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking ranitidine.

Common side effects include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

There are some rare yet severe side effects associated with ranitidine. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience a slow or irregular heartbeat or changes in urinating, including blood in the urine.

Leaflets
