Insomnia is a serious sleep disorder that can cause a range of complications, including an inability to work or focus on daily tasks. Dual orexin receptor antagonists are beneficial for reducing orexin activity, which facilitates peaceful sleep.

Instead of having a sedative effect, Quviviq blocks orexin production, making it a gentler - but effective treatment. This also means you shouldn't experience issues with daytime functioning and can fall asleep easier in the evenings.

When to Use Quviviq (Daridorexant)?

Quviviq should only be used for insomnia and not general relaxation. It's particularly beneficial if you struggle to fall asleep each night or frequently wake up and cannot get back to sleep.

By regulating sleep patterns, the treatment can prevent the ongoing impact of insomnia, including mood swings, problems concentrating, and excess lethargy during the daytime. While a doctor will usually recommend lifestyle changes first, Quviviq can provide short-term relief.

Age Restrictions

The medication is generally suitable for adults over 18, but it's not been tested enough in children. Please avoid using it on younger children due to potential complications.

While most seniors over 65 can take Quviviq, it's best to seek medical advice before doing so, as there's an increased risk of side effects.

How to Take Quviviq Insomnia Treatment?

You can take Quviviq when insomnia symptoms present. Please take one tablet in the evening, 30 minutes before you go to sleep. Wherever possible, it's best to swallow the tablet with a glass of water and avoid eating with it due to the potential delay in its insomnia-relieving effects.

It's important to avoid taking the medication unless you're able to stay in bed for seven hours due to potential drowsiness.

When to Avoid Using It?

While Quviviq is gentler than traditional sedatives, there are still some occasions when it's best to avoid using it. These include:

  • Going to Bed Late: If you go to bed late and have an early start, the medicine could impact your concentration and cause accidents at work.
  • You're Taking Medications: While few frequently reported adverse reactions occur when taking other medicines, it's best to consult with a GP or registered pharmacist—even if you're only using OTC treatments or supplements.
  • You Have Narcolepsy: Individuals with narcolepsy should avoid using any form of sleeping medication as it can worsen their condition.

Precautions

If you're sensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients in Quviviq, you should avoid using it as there can be extreme reactions. Individuals with current or former mental health conditions should let their doctor know before using the medicine.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, it's also important to inform the prescriber, as they'll be able to advise on whether the treatment could cause adverse effects.

Ingredients

The active substance in Quviviq is daridorexant. Inactive ingredients include mannitol, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate and povidone.

When you first begin to take Quviviq, you might experience some mild side effects, including dizziness, nausea, headaches, and fatigue. These usually disappear as your body gets used to the treatment. Other potential side effects include:

  • Drowsiness during the day
  • Nightmares or vivid dreams
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleep paralysis

If you suffer from moderate hepatic impairment, please inform your healthcare provider. You may require a dose adjustment, but it might be best to seek an alternative treatment for severe liver problems.
