Oral HRT is licensed for use in women who have not had a period in 12 consecutive months. It usually contains estradiol, which helps to replace oestrogen deficiency and a synthetic form of progesterone. Some tablets contain both hormones; some have a 14-day cycle of a single hormone with a 14-day cycle of combined hormones or can contain only oestrogen.

When to Use Premique?

Premique is a type of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) that reduces the symptoms of oestrogen deficiency in women with an intact uterus.

It's typically used in the following situations:

  • Relieving Menopausal Symptoms: Menopause can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including hot flushes, sleep disturbances, night sweats and vaginal dryness.
  • Period-Free HRT: Premique Low Dose, a combined treatment, can stop monthly bleeds. However, some HRT treatments do initiate monthly bleeds.
  • Osteoporosis Prevention: A GP might also prescribe Premique as a preventative treatment for osteoporosis in women with higher risks of developing the condition after menopause.

Age Restrictions

There's no fixed upper age limit for using Premique, although women who start menopause after 60 should speak to a healthcare professional before using it. While the treatment is suitable for people aged 18 and over, it's designed for menopausal symptoms, which usually occur in the 40s and 50s.

How to Use Premique HRT Treatment?

When using Premique, please take one tablet daily and start a new pack immediately after you run out. You shouldn't have a tablet-free break.

While not essential, taking Premique at the same time each day ensures you don't forget it.

Please swallow the tablet whole and take it with some water (you can take it with or without food). If you're taking Premique after using sequential HRT treatments (with a monthly bleed), please wait after your bleed stops before you begin Premique treatment.

When to Avoid Using Premique?

Premique is generally a safe treatment, but there are some circumstances when you should avoid it. These include:

  • Previous Medical Conditions: You shouldn't use the HRT treatment if you have a history of breast cancer or oestrogen-dependent tumours.
  • Vaginal Bleeding: If you have unexpected vaginal bleeding, you should seek medical advice before using it, as you could have an underlying condition.
  • Current Medical Conditions: Individuals with liver disease or abnormal liver tests, endometrial hyperplasia, DVT, and other conditions should speak to their doctor, but in most cases, they'll recommend that you avoid it.
  • Allergies or Sensitivities: If you're allergic or sensitive to medroxyprogesterone, conjugated oestrogens, or other ingredients, please avoid using Premique.

Precautions

Premique is an HRT treatment, and it isn't suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you have symptoms of a medical condition but don't yet have a diagnosis, please speak to a doctor before using Premique.
