Pepto-Bismol is suitable for adults and children over 12. It's not intended for use in younger children, but other treatments are available, including Pepto Kids.

How to Use Pepto Bismol Oral Suspension?

When using Pepto Bismol, please follow the instructions and ensure you don't exceed the recommended daily dose. Adults should take 30 ml every 60 minutes when needed, with a maximum of eight doses in 24 hours.

When to Avoid Using It?

You should avoid using Pepto-Bismol 17.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension - 120ml in the following situations:

  • Salicylate Allergies: Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate, which can cause an allergic reaction if you're allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients.
  • Using Other Products: If you're currently taking other medications that contain salicylates - including pain relief such as aspirin, you should avoid using Pepto-Bismol as it can increase the risks of salicylate toxicity.
  • Stomach Ulcers: While Pepto-Bismol effectively relieves acid reflux, it shouldn't be taken if you have an ulcer or bleeding disorder because it can worsen the conditions.
  • Black/Bloody Stools: People with bloody or black stools should avoid using Pepto-Bismol as it's often a sign of a more serious condition.
  • Kidney Problems: While you might be able to use Pepto-Bismol with a kidney condition, seeking medical advice first is essential.

Precautions

If you're currently taking any medications, including blood thinners, gout treatments and some antibiotics, you should seek medical advice before using Pepto-Bismol.

While it's usually fine to use Pepto-Bismol in the early stages of your pregnancy, you may need to avoid it during the later stages and while you're breastfeeding. Please speak to your doctor for advice.

If you're still experiencing symptoms after using Pepto-Bismol for two days, you may require medical treatment for an underlying condition.
