Paracetamol is a common medication used to treat mild to moderate pain and reduce fevers. It's suitable for the following uses:

  • Pain Relief: Paracetamol treats a range of pain conditions, including backaches, muscle strains, toothaches, and headaches. It's gentler on the stomach than anti-inflammatories and is usually a first-line treatment.
  • Fever Reduction: The medicine is also ideal for reducing temperatures associated with viruses and infections.
  • Period Pain: If you experience mild period pain, Paracetamol can be beneficial.

Age Restrictions for Paracetamol 500mg Tablets

Paracetamol 500mg is suitable for adults and children over 10, but only people over 16 years old can purchase it. If you have a younger child, you should choose a lower-strength paracetamol option.

How to Use Paracetamol 500mg Tablets?

When using Paracetamol tablets, please follow the instructions and do not exceed the recommended dose.

Take each tablet whole with water, and never split, crush or chew them unless the instructions say it's OK to do so.

In even, spaced doses, a patient can take up to 4 doses per day. It is recommended to leave at least 4 hours between each dose.

Paracetamol 500mg tablets take up to 1 hour to work. The usual dose for Paracetamol 500mg tablets is 1-2 tablets up to 4 times in 24 hours, with a maximum of 8 tablets taken in any 24 hours.

Please note that long-term excessive paracetamol use can lead to organ damage.

Who Shouldn't Take Paracetamol 500mg?

Paracetamol is one of the safest pain relief medicines available, but there are some cases when you should avoid it. These include:

  • Allergies: If you've ever experienced a mild or severe allergic reaction to Paracetamol or any of its inactive ingredients, including breathing difficulties and serious skin reactions, you should avoid using it.
  • Liver & Kidney Disease: Kidney and liver disease can impair your body's ability to metabolise Paracetamol, leading to toxic levels.
  • Medications: If you're using medicines like blood thinners or epilepsy treatments, you may be unable to take Paracetamol.

Precautions for Paracetamol 500mg

The following cases don't rule you out of taking Paracetamol, but you should seek advice from a GP or pharmacist before using the tablets:

  • Low Weight: If you weigh under 50kg, please check with the pharmacist regarding how many tablets you can take daily.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Regular heavy drinkers can put their organs at risk when using Paracetamol.
