Prescription Range

Ovestin 1mg cream is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) option used during menopause to relieve vaginal dryness (vaginal atrophy). Unlike other HRT treatments, you apply Ovestin Cream high up inside the vagina using a reusable applicator. After application, the cream emulates oestrogen levels that the ovaries typically produce to ensure the vagina stays comfortable and moist. It's suitable for women aged 18 and over and contains the active ingredient estriol (an oestrogen hormone).

Ovestin 1mg cream is a hormone-based treatment for women going through menopause. The shortage of oestrogens during menopause may cause the vaginal wall and its lining to become dry and thin. This can lead to pain during intercourse and an increase in itching/irritation, which can cause infections. By replacing estrogen via the vaginal cream Ovestin, the patient can see a reduction in symptoms and maintain balance during menopause.

When to Use Ovestin Cream?

Ovestin Cream (also known as 0.1% Estriol Cream) is a localised HRT treatment suitable for postmenopausal women. It can relieve symptoms caused by a drop in estrogen levels and is best used in the following situations:

  • Vaginal Symptoms: Menopause can cause a range of vaginal symptoms, including itching, irritation, urinary infections, the urge to urinate frequently, and painful intercourse. Ovestin cream can relieve your symptoms.
  • Wound Healing: In some cases, Ovestin cream may also be used to promote faster healing after vaginal surgery. You'll typically use it before and after the surgery.
  • Cervical Smears: Ovestin is also beneficial for assessing atrophic cervical smears in postmenopausal patients.

Ovestin Age Restrictions

Ovestin 1mg cream is only suitable for postmenopausal women who haven't had a period in at least 12 months. If you're currently going through menopausal symptoms, you should seek medical advice and choose another treatment.

How to Use Ovestin Cream?

If you haven't used HRT before or are switching from an HRT that doesn't cause menstrual bleeding, you can start using Ovestin cream immediately.

However, if you're transitioning from another HRT treatment, you should wait for a week before starting it.

How to Use It?

  • Open the Tube and use the pointed end to pierce the seal.
  • Attack the plastic applicator onto the tube.
  • Squeeze the tube until the cream reaches the red applicator.
  • Lie down and apply the cream by inserting the applicator into your vagina and pressing until the cream is released.
  • Remove the applicator and wash it thoroughly.

Who Should Avoid Using Ovestin?

Ovestin Cream is a great way to relieve menopause symptoms but isn't suitable for everyone. If any of the following apply, you should avoid using it:

  • History of Cancer: If you have a history of breast cancer or other estrogen-sensitive cancers, you should avoid using the cream and seek alternative treatments.
  • Vaginal Bleeding: The cream is only suitable for women who haven't had a bleed in 12 months. If you're dealing with unexpected bleeding, please see a doctor.
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia: You'll need to seek treatment for endometrial hyperplasia before using Ovestin cream if you have any of the symptoms.
  • Blood Clots: Ovestin isn't suitable for people with a history of blood clots or clotting disorders.
  • Allergies: If you're allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in Ovestin cream, you should avoid using it.

Ovestin Precautions

People with a history of liver disease should have tests to confirm their liver function is normal before using the cream.

Individuals with porphyria (a rare blood disorder) should also speak to their doctor before using it.

Other conditions that could rule you out of using the cream include high blood pressure, uterine fibroids, diabetes, gallstones, migraines, and lupus.
