Imigran nasal spray is an effective migraine relief medication. It is not designed for preventing migraines. It contains the active ingredient sumatriptan, which belongs to the family of medicines called triptans. It is for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura.

In a simple nasal spray form, Imigran nasal spray targets symptoms through the nasal cavity for quick relief when a migraine occurs. Imigran nasal spray works by reducing the activity of pain receptors in the brain, as well as narrowing blood vessels to reduce pressure.

Like all medications, there are potential risks of side effects associated with Imigran nasal spray. These most commonly include chest pain, heaviness and tightness. As well, Imigran nasal spray has been associated with sensations of numbness, tingling and warmth or cold. Imigran nasal spray’s side effects usually subside quickly.

Other common side effects of Imigran nasal spray include:

  • Short-term blood pressure increase
  • Nausea or vomiting. However, these could be due to the migraine itself
  • Feeling tired, dizzy or drowsy, as well as feeling weak or experiencing hot flushes
  • Shortness in breath

When using Imigran nasal spray, it is common to experience nasal irritation, altered taste, or throat irritation as well.
