EarCalm spray is a product that is used to treat outer ear infections. The active ingredient in EarCalm spray is acetic acid. Acetic acid is an antibacterial agent that targets the bacteria causing the outer ear infection. Treating the bacteria will reduce swelling and pain.
When to Use EarCalm Spray?
Earcalm is an over-the-counter spray that treats external ear canal infections (also known as otitis externa). It's beneficial for minor infections that cause symptoms like:
- Itching inside the ear
- Redness or swelling
- Minor discomfort when you move your earlobe
- Mild discharge
- A feeling that the ear is full
It contains acetic acid, which lowers the pH in your ear canal.
Age Restrictions for EarCalm Spray
EarCalm is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and older. However, you shouldn't administer it to younger children, as it hasn't been proven effective.
How to Use Earcalm Spray?
When using Earcalm, it's essential to follow the instructions to ensure it works:
- Prepare: Shake the bottle well. If you're starting a new bottle, you'll need to prime the pump. This involves squirting it a few times until a fine mist appears.
- Clean Your Ear: Use a tissue to gently wipe your outer ear and remove any discharge. Please note
- Stay tilted: Keep your head tilted for about 30–60 seconds to let the liquid settle.
- Repeat: If the infection is in both ears, repeat the process for the other side.
You can use up to three sprays daily - morning, afternoon, and evening. The minimum time you should use the spray is 48 hours, even if your ear symptoms begin to improve after 24 hours.
Please note that you should never use the spray for more than one week. If your symptoms persist, book an appointment with your GP.
When to Avoid Using EarCalm Spray for an Outer Ear Infection?
Earcalm is most effective for minor outer ear infections such as swimmer’s ear. However, there are some cases when you should avoid using it.
These include:
- Perforated Eardrum: The spray contains acetic acid, which can cause intense pain and even permanently damage your hearing.
- Grommets: Grommets use tubes that create a path to the inner ear. When you use the spray, it impacts your inner ears.
- Children Under 12: The spray isn't approved for use in children under 12, unless a doctor recommends it.
- Allergies: Avoid using Earcalm if you're allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients.
- Heavy Discharge: Small amounts of discharge are fine, but heavy discharge often requires strong antibiotics.
Precautions for EarCalm Spray
If any of the following apply, please see a medical professional before using EarCalm:
- Intense Pain: The spray is only suitable for minor ear infections. If you're experiencing significant pain, please find an alternative treatment.
- Hearing Loss: When your hearing suffers, it often points to a middle ear infection instead of the outer ear.
- High Temperature: High temperatures often point to more severe infections that require medical treatment.
- Medical Conditions: Individuals with autoimmune conditions or diabetes should also take precautions, as the risk of infection spreading to the bones is higher.
