Colgate Duraphat toothpaste provides better cavity protection than regular toothpaste because it contains approximately four times the amount of fluoride as other fluoride-containing products.

It helps prevent dental plaque from forming, reducing harmful plaque acids that lead to tooth decay. Early use of this high-fluoride toothpaste can help reverse enamel demineralisation and repair the damaged area.

When to Use Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste?

Colgate Duraphat is an effective way to treat and prevent tooth decay in high-risk individuals. It's usually available in two strengths: 2800ppm and 5000ppm fluoride.

A dentist will assess your health and determine whether the toothpaste is suitable. You'll replace your regular toothpaste with Duraphat and use it three times a day - usually after consuming a meal.

It's most beneficial for:

  • Tooth Decay: People with tooth decay or at a higher risk of developing it should use Duraphat.
  • Sensitive Teeth: As Duraphat contains high levels of fluoride, it can reduce sensitivity by strengthening the enamel.
  • Existing Dental Treatments: People with existing dental treatments, including fillings, bridges, and crowns, are at higher risk of tooth decay.

Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste Age Restrictions

Durphat Toothpaste is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and over. However, the strength of your toothpaste depends on your age, so it's important to follow the instructions and avoid giving stronger toothpaste to children between 10 and 16 years old.

How to Use Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste?

As Colgate Duraphat is a prescription-strength treatment, you'll need to carefully follow your dentist's instructions:

  • Replace: Duraphat shouldn't be used with your current toothpaste, so please be sure to replace it and avoid using both simultaneously.
  • Use After Meals: You should use the toothpaste three times daily after each meal to ensure it has the best possible effect.
  • Never Swallow: Always spit the toothpaste out when using it instead of swallowing it.
  • Wait: It's best to wait at least 30 minutes before rinsing your mouth with water or drinking, as the fluoride needs a chance to work correctly.
  • Don't Mix Sources: When using Durophat Toothpaste, please avoid using other fluoride sources, including gels, varnishes, and drops, unless your dentist recommends otherwise.

Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste Dosage Instructions

Children aged 10 to 16 should use the 2800ppm Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste. Apply approximately 1 cm to the toothbrush twice daily - after breakfast and an evening meal.

Adolescents age 16 and over and adults should use the 5000ppm toothpaste and apply 2 cm onto the toothbrush. Brush your teeth three times daily, preferably after each meal.

When to Avoid Using Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste?

If any of the following applies, you should avoid using Colgate Duraphat:

  • Allergies: If you're sensitive or allergic to the ingredients in Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste, you should avoid using it as it can cause an allergic reaction.
  • Oral Conditions: People with stomatitis or ulcerative gingivitis should also avoid using the toothpaste, as it can worsen the condition.
  • Young Children: Children under 10 should never use the toothpaste, as high fluoride levels can discolour the tooth enamel.

Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste Precautions

While Duraphat isn't expressly banned for pregnant and breastfeeding women, you should inform your dentist and follow their advice.

It's also essential to inform your dentist of medications you're currently taking, as some may cause interactions.

Side Effects of Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste

Duraphat Toothpaste, like other medicines, can cause some unwanted adverse effects, although not everybody who uses it gets them.

In very rare cases, people treated with Colgate Duraphat have allergic reactions. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, and redness.

Some people who used the product reported a burning sensation in their mouth.

If you experience any other side effects associated with using this product, talk to your dentist, doctor, or pharmacist.

Do not use Colgate Duraphat if you are allergic to sodium fluoride or any of the other ingredients of this product.

Take special care with this product. Duraphat toothpaste has a high fluoride content. Avoid fluoride tablets, chewing gum, drops, varnishes, gels, and fluoride water or salt when using Colgate Duraphat. Your dentist must assess your total intake of fluoride to prevent fluoride accumulation.

If you accidentally swallow a large amount of this toothpaste and experience digestive problems, report to your doctor immediately, as you may require treatment for those problems.

Duraphat contains menthol, which, if ingested accidentally at excessive amounts, may cause convulsions, particularly in children.

You may experience stained teeth or a speckled appearance of the tooth enamel if you constantly swallow too much toothpaste over months or years.

Fluoridated salt or water should be avoided during the use of Colgate Duraphat. Food and drink, when taken after brushing, may inhibit the mineralisation of your teeth. Always brush your teeth with Colgate Duraphat toothpaste after your meals.

The effects of using Duraphat during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not established. If you are pregnant or you are breastfeeding your infant, ask your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist before you use this toothpaste.

No interactions with Colgate Duraphat and other medicines are currently known. Share with your doctor or dentist a list of all your medications, including those without prescriptions.
