Calprofen Suspension 100mg/5ml is generally well-tolerated, but it can cause side effects in some individuals. It's important to be aware of potential side effects and to seek medical advice if you have any concerns.

Common side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: Some children may experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea after taking ibuprofen. Giving the medication with food can help reduce these effects.
  • Allergic reactions: Symptoms can include skin rashes, itching, redness, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. These rare reactions require immediate discontinuation of the medication and medical attention.

Rare side effects:

  • Liver and kidney issues: Prolonged use or overdose of ibuprofen can lead to serious liver or kidney damage. Symptoms to watch for include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, severe fatigue, or decreased urine output.
  • Blood disorders: Very rarely, some individuals develop blood disorders such as anaemia or thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). Symptoms include unusual bruising, bleeding, or frequent infections.

If your child shows signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe rash, seek emergency medical help immediately.

No matter how minor they may seem, you must stop using the medicine and consult a healthcare professional if you notice any adverse effects. They can provide guidance on whether to continue the medication or consider alternative treatments.

You can also contact the Pharmacy Online team for advice and support regarding any concerns about this medicine. We are available to assist with any questions about side effects, dosage, and suitability for your child.
