Beechams Powders act rapidly to relieve bothersome cold and flu symptoms due to a combination of caffeine and aspirin. Aspirin treats mild to moderate pain, such as rheumatic pain and headaches, lowers inflammation and reduces your temperature when you have a fever. Caffeine acts as a mild stimulant and enhances the painkilling effects of paracetamol.
As with all medications, Beechams Powders may trigger side effects, for example:
- Ulcers or perforation of the stomach: Feeling sick, being sick, extreme abdominal discomfort. Anyone with a sensitive stomach may experience irritation and bleeding (notice blood in their stools), or vomit up blood or dark particles (that look like ground coffee).
- Extreme allergic responses: Breathing problems, swelling of the lips, mouth, and tongue, asthma attacks or chest tightening (in people with an aspirin allergy).
- Bruising, bleeding, or yellowing of the skin and eyes if the blood fails to clot (rare).
- Weakness, generalised swelling, lethargy, shortness of breath, water retention, tinnitus or short-term hearing loss.
- Nervousness and dizziness (due to high caffeine intake).
If you notice any of these effects, cease taking this medicine promptly and speak to your GP or Pharmacy Online pharmacist.
