Atovaquone Proguanil (also known as 'generic Malarone') is used to prevent malaria. These malaria tablets belong to the family of medicines called antimalarials. They kill the parasite P. falciparum, which is known to cause malaria, stopping it from multiplying. It's suitable for adults and children and has two active ingredients: atovaquone and proguanil.

Atovaquone/Proguanil, sold under the brand name Malarone, is used for malaria prevention in individuals travelling to high-risk countries.

Dosage

One generic Malarone tablet is to be taken daily starting 1-2 days before travelling and continued for seven days after returning from an at-risk country.

There is always a risk of side effects with all medications, including antimalarial medication such as generic Malarone. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking atovaquone/proguanil.

Common side effects of generic Malarone may include:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Skin reactions

This generic Malarone medication can sometimes cause skin rashes and blisters. It may result in peeling skin, especially around the mouth. If you develop a rash, you need to seek medical help immediately.
